Resurrection of the World’s Best Fixed TACAN Antenna
Korea Airports Corporation (KAC) has successfully reproduced fixed TACAN antenna AT-100 through technology transfer from Rantec Microwave Systems (no longer a manufacturer of the AT-100), a global leading antenna manufacturer. In July 2013, KAC was given the exclusive manufacturing right to deliver AT-100 antenna to the world by signing the Manufacturing License Agreement with Rantec upon the approval from the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls of the U.S. Department of Defense. After that, in November 2016, KAC passed the flight test performed by German Flight Calibration Service (FCS), which verified the reliabilities of TACAN equipment and antenna. FCS is a German government-approved institution that offers flight inspection services for air traffic control navigation in Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Kuwait and others.

AT-100 is a universally recognized antenna for its reliability, stability and durability, with more than 400 installed and operated in the world since 1975. As the replacement time approaches, demand is high for TACAN system replacement and spare parts supply. To this end, KAC will grow into a total solution provider to accommodate future demand for TACAN AT-100 antenna as well as complete TACAN system and radio environment analysis technology that promotes coverage analysis and selection of optimal installation site.

KAC is a state-owned enterprise operating 14 airports in Korea. Based on 38 years of expertise in equipment operation, KAC has developed fixed TACAN SkyMaru 400G for commercialization, giving it a title of a fixed TACAN manufacturer preceded by the U.S. and France. TACAN SkyMaru 400G and AT-100 has been certified by ICAO Annex 10 and Military Standard (MIL-STD-291C, 461F, 810G). Also, the government of the Republic of Korea (ROK) recognized the system with the Certificate of Performance Quality. Since then, KAC supplied TACAN to the ROK Naval base in 2016 for operation. Currently, the price-quality competition with foreign manufacturer is underway after being proposed for extensive Naval base TACAN installation project.

The Performance of KAC’s TACAN
SkyMaru 400G and AT-100 antenna developed by KAC is equipped with Korea’s latest IT technology aimed to maximize user convenience and stability. The system supports immediate operation at a full scale even after the replacement has been made. It exhibits outstanding performance that includes the creation of stable signal and precise measurement, without the need for additional adjustments. The default output of SkyMaru 400G is 3 kW and it can be increased up to 5 kW. It accommodates a wide input power range of 90-300V AC and provides VSWR measurement of the antenna. Using the TACAN signal analyzer mounted on SkyMaru 400G, it can measure main signal components of Bearing, 15Hz/135Hz
Modulation Index, Received power, Rotation speed, Harmonic through antenna to probe antenna, and gives the user an alarm signal if there are any values that are out of tolerance range.
AT-100, Electronically scanned antenna
With the full frequency available Tunable Filter, SkyMaru 400G improves frequency selectivity and sensitivity up to above –95 dBm AT-100 uses solid-state electronic scanning and thus permanently usable. Modulation Generator supports various communication types, including RS-232, RS-485, TCP/IP, and Dial-modem, enabling remote control and monitoring. In addition, the equipment’s status is displayed through the LCD
panel of the equipment and GUI (Graphic User Interface) of RMMS (Remote Monitoring Maintenance System) for easy maintenance. MG-300, the modulation generator, generates a composition signal of 15Hz and 135Hz for electronic antenna rotation. It notifies the modulation index and phase connected to 36 emitters of the antenna through the GUI. It also provides a function to adjust bearing offset and modulation level of 15Hz and 135Hz.

Apart from TACAN, KAC also provides NAVAIDs equipment and airport facilities such as ILS (Instrument Landing System), Airfield lighting
system, PBB (Passenger Boarding Bridge), BHS (Baggage Handling Systems) and others. More than 200 KAC systems with high level of
convenience and stability have been installed and is currently in operation in 15 countries around the world. Likewise, KAC is making the
next great leap forward to foray into the world market as to expand overseas business.
