Special drainage solution for Terminal 1 at Fraport
The Terminal. The heart of any airport and at the same time a central place that passengers use, perceive and remember for its architecture. The look and the technology have to match. For example, Fraport in Frankfurt am Main, Germany’s largest airport, recently modernised the outdoor arrivals level outside Terminal 1. The covered terminal access road now shines in an up-to-date look. Bright and friendly, obstacle-free and with digital information panels, the area at Terminal 1 welcomes passengers. When it came to drainage solutions, engineering office Klein und Holzmann mbH from Dreieich sought out particularly high-quality channels. The purpose of these was to underline the modern architecture, in a uniform and discreet design, whilst at the same time providing reliable drainage.
Project management developed customised stainless steel solution
The project engineers at HAURATON responded to the request by developing special drainage solutions. Among the various proposals put forward, the decision was quickly made to opt for stainless steel channels with elegant longitudinal gratings. The stainless steel design not only meets high quality standards, but also offers significant technical advantages due to the material properties. All channels and gratings arecorrosion-resistant and withstand frost and de-icing agents
Narrow channels with high hydraulic performance
The specific design of the channel elements was subsequently adapted to the necessary technical requirements. “The channels were intended to be primarily installed in footpaths along the access road,” explains Hermann Walter from the HAURATON sales team. “These areas are usually very heavily frequented by passengers with rolling luggage. It had to be ensured that the hydraulic requirements were met and that pedestrian safety was guaranteed.” For these tasks, the newly installed small channels with longitudinal gratings make the ideal system. The narrow channels are produced with a correspondingly high construction height and thus offer sufficient capacity for surface water. A corresponding backwater reserve was also created.
Design “with a hint of shine”: Uniform line guaranteed
The drainage points are also a customised solution and were specially developed for this construction project. The surface of the point drainage was designed in the look of the surrounding surface coating. Trash boxes, which connect to the sewer, must be removable to allow for the maintenance of the drainage system. Consequently, the grating must be detachable from the box so that the channels and drainage points can be cleaned as necessary. Walter: “The drainage points were enclosed with concrete slabs. This satisfies an important requirement: it ensures a continuous aesthetic line without drainage point boxes. “In order to ensure consistency in every case”, Hermann Walter continued, “several metres of false gratings were installed”. Since it was impossible to install the channel over a stretch of 30 metres, the surface appears exactly the same – the gratings were also extended over this area.
Heavy duty version? Why not!
In another area, heavy-load channels were required for vehicle traffic. FASERFIX SUPER chan-nels suitable for heavy traffic were used here. To ensure a standard appearance, however, a customised grating specially developed for use at Fraport was chosen. A longitudinal grating designed for loads up to class D 400 ensures truck accessibility and the elegant appearance of the pedestrian areas, which is continued on to the site.
